The Kashi Hallegua House is a historic Jewish synagogue built in 1568 during the Dutch era by the Paradesi Jewish community. Once a vibrant centre for religious and cultural life, it stands today as one of Kochi’s most significant heritage landmarks, embodying centuries of exchange, migration, and coexistence. Mattanchery was once home to many Jewish families whose lineages trace back to communities that journeyed across continents—including to Kerala, around two thousand years ago, establishing enduring settlements along the Malabar coast. Their presence shaped the social and cultural landscape of the region, leaving behind rich traditions, architectural legacies, and stories of belonging. Now activated as a site for contemporary art and cultural dialogue by Edgar Pinto, the Hallegua House along with the Kashi Art Galleries continue this spirit of exchange. It offers a living testament to Kochi’s diverse past while opening its doors to new artistic encounters that resonate with its deeply layered history.
