Behind the Scenes is a workshop that offers an inside view into the different careers in the field of modern and contemporary art. Art institutions have undergone an unprecedented change in the 21st century giving rise to new work opportunities and expanding the existing ones. This workshop gives a peek into some of the key areas of work in the art world today, along with insights into various positions, the skills required and the educational institutions where those can be learned.
The workshop is designed and led by the Ishara Art Foundation. All sessions are free of charge and conducted in English.
Creative Careers Days is UAE’s first, annual festival devoted to high school, university students and their families that want to explore a future in the arts. Organised by Jameel Arts Centre with the participation of leading arts organisations and universities in the country, the event offers a unique opportunity to meet and discuss ideas with key artists, curators and industry specialists.

SESSION 1
Time: 10:30 am – 11:30 am
Curation and Art Writing – led by Sabih Ahmed
Beginning with the question ‘what is curation and art-writing?’, this session outlines different facets of what it means to be a curator and an art writer, and the roles they serve in museums, biennales, galleries and art organisations. The session touches upon educational programmes around the world that offer training in the two disciplines and what are the prospects of practicing independently. The session includes a presentation by Sabih Ahmed followed by a Q&A.
Communications and Marketing – led by Asavari Sehgal
Communications and Marketing play an integral part in the art world by disseminating information and bridging the gap between the public and the art industry. This session offers an overview of the roles and responsibilities, the skill-sets and the educational training required to build a career in this profession. The session will include a presentation by Asavari Sehgal followed by a Q&A.

Museums and Heritage Management – led by Himanshu Kadam
Museums are regarded as one of the most prestigious institutions for preserving art and culture. What remains invisible to the public eye is the breadth of specialised staff that contribute to its departments and to its day-to-day tasks. This session provides an in-depth view of the museum and heritage management, it’s recent developments and the positions that work behind-the-scenes to maintain its core values. The session also maps various education programmes around the world that offer training in the two areas. The session includes a presentation by Himanshu Kadam followed by a Q&A.
Art Conservation and Restoration – led by Isha Parma
Art conservation and restoration is a specialised field where art meets science. This session offers an introduction to what is art conversation, who are the people that restore artworks and what do conservation laboratories look like. The session outlines the skills and training required for this vocation and the leading institutions globally where conservation work is going on. The session includes a presentation by Isha Parmar followed by a Q&A.
