Ishara Art Foundation in collaboration with the Jameel Arts Centre presents a three-part workshop comprising of reading circles, a public talk and a film-screening as a companion to the exhibition ‘Proposals for a Memorial for Partition’ curated by Murtaza Vali at Art Jameel. Reading Between the Lines revisits the history of South Asia’s Partition through narratives that complicate the idea of political and cartographic borders by attending to stories of internal social partitions around gender, caste and language.
The workshop will be conducted in English with each session requiring pre-registration.

SESSION 1: The Other Side of Silence
Date: Sunday, October 9, 2022

The first session is a reading circle that delves into The Other Side of Silence by Urvashi Butalia that was first published in 1998. Focusing on narratives of marginalised voices and stories that get written-out of the archive, the session unpacks the problematic terrain of history, facts and testimonies in the history of Partition, inviting a discussion on what constitutes research. The session takes place in Jameel Library and is moderated by Sabih Ahmed.
Conducted in English, pre-registration is mandatory due to limited seats. Participants must be over the age of 18. Participants will be provided an excerpt, Beginnings, from The Other Side of Silence by Urvashi Butalia.
SESSION 2: Ambient Citizenship

The second session of ‘Reading Between the Lines’ is a reading circle that focuses on Cruel Optimism by Lauren Berlant that was published in 2011. Delving into concepts such as ambient citizenship and the violence of political fantasy in the 21st century elaborated in the book, the session attempts to read the history and contemporary struggles in Kashmir and what it means to occupy a space of affective affinities and quiet resistance. The reading group is moderated by Nabla Yahya along with Sabih Ahmed.
Conducted in English, pre-registration is mandatory as there are limited seats only. Participants must be over the age of 18. Participants will be provided with an excerpt from the book upon registration.
SESSION 3: Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters)
Date: Saturday, November 5, 2022

The third session is a film screening of Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters), directed by Sabiha Sumer, written by Paromita Vohra and released in 2003. Set in the late-1970s in a village in Pakistan, the film revolves around Ayesha, a widowed mother, and her young son caught in the midst of radical changes in the country that bring back her memories of the Partition. The film screening will take place at Ishara Art Foundation followed by a discussion.
The film is in Punjabi language with English subtitles. The discussion will be conducted in English. Pre-registration is mandatory due to limited seats. Participants must be over the age of 18.
