Nilima Sheikh


Nilima Sheikh (b. 1945) studied in Baroda between 1965 and 1971, and started exhibiting professionally in 1969. Her solo exhibitions include Terrain: Carrying Across Leaving Behind in Mumbai (2017) and New Delhi (2018) and Each Night put Kashmir in your Dreams at The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago (2014). Her recent group participations include Thinking Historically in the Present, Sharjah Biennial 15, Sharjah, (2023); Woman is as Woman Does, CSMVS, Mumbai (2022); Dhaka Art Summit, Dhaka (2020); Kochi Muziris Biennale, Kochi (2018); and documenta 14, Athens and Kassel (2017).

Collaborating with a fellow artist and with craftspeople from Srinagar, she made a large mural entitled Conjoining Lands, measuring 50 by 180 inches, for the international airport in Mumbai in 2014.

She has written on art in books, journals and catalogues, and illustrated books for children. In the 1990s, she was involved in the design of theatre productions as part of a women’s collective.
